How to Win the War Against Bullying | Israel "Izzy" Kalman | TEDxBucharest
Bullying is one of today's greatest issues when it comes to our interactions with the ones around us, a real epidemic nowadays. And while we are fighting against it, it seems like we are loosing the war. Izzy Kalman talks and demonstrates on stage how the best solution to bullying is using freedom of speech, mandated by the golden rule of treating others like you want others to treat you. We are all entitled to live a life in which nobody should treat us badly. Izzy Kalman, MS, is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and psychotherapist with four decades of work experience. He has developed a quick, fun and powerful method for teaching people how to solve interpersonal problems, including bullying, without anyone’s help and without getting anyone in trouble. He is director of Bullies to Buddies, Inc, creator of the website and author of a book for young adults called Bullies to Buddies: How to turn your enemies into friends, as well as a number of other publications on bullying for kids and adults. Izzy writes a Psychology Today blog called Resilience to Bullying, and has been the world’s foremost critic of the anti-bullying movement, warning since the Columbine massacre that the “war against bullying” will backfire. History has been confirming his predictions. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Israel Kalman's approach to bullying in schools and why he thinks the modern approach is failing.
*For a view from the other side, please see my interview with Jan Urbanski of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, which will be available at the following link on May 16th at 6 PM. https://youtu.be/Hv6rV55zkk0 These two interviews should highlight the two prevailing thoughts with regard to the issue of bullying. Kalman says we need to teach kids how not to be a victim. The Olweus approach attempts to change the culture of a school by making sure everyone knows bullying will not be tolerated.* Israel 'Izzy' Kalman is a school psychologist, author, and one of the only critics of the modern anti-bullying - or bullying prevention - movement. With 40 years experience as a school psychologist, Kalman says the modern bullying prevention movement is failing. He says it's failing because it is a political movement - not a practical one. Kalman says, because 'everybody thinks the bully is somebody else,' nothing changes.
Mental Health in the News: Bullies 2 Buddies
In today's podcast of Mental Health in the News, the S'eclairer staff talks to noted Bullying Expert Israel C. Kalman, author of Bullies 2 Buddies ( http://www.bullies2buddies.com ). "Izzy" developed a program to address bullying from a unique perspective -- to change the behavior of the 'victim' rather than trying to change the behavior of the bully. Recently a school psychologist in Nebraska sent home a list of "rules" for how to NOT be bullied, and when some parents responded negatively, Izzy and his program became the object of bullying by the press and social media. Medical Director Dr. Safdar Chaudhary, media consultant Sven Hosford, and Intern Jill Gross question Izzy on his program, the controversy, and what finally happened after he was bullied.
